Preparing for change
Because everyone is different, changing a behavior is a highly individualized process. The method, timing and pace of change vary from one person to the next. As you contemplate making a change in your life, here are some general principles to guide you:
It’s not a race. Sometimes, a little shock therapy can help. That’s what’s behind Lose It! It’s designed to bump you off your normal course and show you that change can bring results.
But long-term change, involving basic lifestyle shifts, typically doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time and dedication to unlearn unhealthy behaviors and develop new, healthy ones that lead to permanent weight loss. Plan for long-term weight loss, but feel free to repeat Lose It! if you need a boost and a reminder that change works.
Don’t overreact to the scale. Weighing yourself regularly can help in weight loss, but don’t let daily variations in your weight upset you. They may be just fluid changes. You have better control over what you eat and what you do than over numbers on the scale, so concentrate on those actions as your goal.
Anticipate a lapse. There will be days when you eat more or move less than you intended. That’s what’s called a lapse, and it’s inevitable that you’ll occasionally lapse. But it’s important not to use a lapse as an excuse to give up. Have a plan for such occasions. See Chapter 15 for more on lapses.
